DETOXIFY YOUR BRAIN

Question: Why do human beings who rely so heavily on science in the case of serious illness and illness prevention, quickly and happily dismiss its findings when it comes to the trivial?

Steve Jobs; when finding that he had cancer delayed standard treatment and instead resorted to alternative therapies which included home remedies that suggested drinking large amounts of fruit and vegetable cocktails. Needless to say, sadly this approach didn't work.

Advances in science have improved quality of life, extended life expectancy and cured diseases that would have doubtless killed millions of people including many of our ancestors and yet, when it comes to the evidence they present about the complete failure of the ability of herbal remedies and juice diets to detoxify the body they are ignored completely.

Let me introduce you to Edzard Ernst Professor of complementary medicine at the University of Exeter. Complementary medicine is a side-branch of regular medicine that recommends non-traditional sources as cures for illnesses. Edzard took the chair in 1993 and was determined to apply scientific methods of analysis to these alternative medicines as many had come under scrutiny of more evidence-based practitioners.

Alternative medicines have a large following. In the early 00’s Prince Charles commissioned a report pretty much promoting alternative therapies. Ernst spoke out ahead of this report and received much criticism.

Ernst carried out clinical trials as well as systematic reviews and meta-analyses of other groups’ research.

His findings? “If there had been a surprise, it was a very gradual realization that more than 90% [of Cam] doesn’t live up to the claims and the expectations of alternative therapists.”.

“Let’s be clear, there are two types of detox: one is respectable and the other isn’t. The respectable one is the medical treatment of people with life-threatening drug addictions.

“The other is the word being hijacked by entrepreneurs, quacks and charlatans to sell a bogus treatment that allegedly detoxifies your body of toxins you’re supposed to have accumulated.”

He goes on to say  “The healthy body has kidneys, a liver, skin, even lungs that are detoxifying as we speak,” he says. “There is no known way – certainly not through detox treatments – to make something that works perfectly well in a healthy body work better.”
